Tim Avilla
1968
While looking at the senior pictures for the Class of '66, I saw my good friend Tim Avila's picture in with the seniors. Tim Avila was killed in a car crash in 1968, just two years after graduation. I really wish I had more information than that, but it's all I have.

I was wondering if anyone remembers the specifics. It's sad no one has written to tell anyone and no one has noticed his death wasn't announced. I thought I could try the SJMerury archives, but they don't go back to 1968.

Dennis Heck

The body of Dennis Heck was recovered by the Churchill County Sheriff's Office, 11 miles southest of Fallon, Nevada. He was last seen at Fox Peak in Fallon on Sept. 22 at about 9:30 p.m.

Heck worked in the electrical department for the city of Fallon and retired in 2008. Mayor Ken Tedford Jr., said Heck was a great man who was loyal to the city. He added that Heck wasn't one who sought out recognition for his accomplishments. “Dennis was a wonderful guy,” Tedford said. “He's going to be sorely missed. Not just by me, but by all of his friends at the city. Our heartfelt feelings go out to his family.”

Brother of Jim Salazar, '68

Enrique Salazar
Enrique attended West Valley College for two years after graduating from Blackford. He moved to Vancouver, BC in the summer of '68 to work with his brother-in-law in a small start-up high-tech company. His creative side did not keep quiet for long and he soon found himself learning as much as he could about graphic design, spurred on by his brother Jim (class of '68) who attended San Jose State to major in graphic design himself.

A year after graduating from SJS, Jim moved to Vancouver to team up with Enrique to start a graphic design company. Eventually, the whole Salazar family moved to Vancouver where they made Canada their home.

In Dec. 1981, Enrique was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor after having experienced a couple of unexplained seizures. His condition finally took a turn for the worse three years later and he spent the last 6 months of his life in his parent's home, where he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 24, 1985.

The B.C. Chapter of the Graphic Designers of Canada have established the Enrique Salazar Award in his memory. The award is given yearly to the top four graphic design students in the Province. Enrique was a founding member of the B.C. chapter and also taught graphic design at Capilano College in North Vancouver.

From Michael Francis:

I discovered the death of one of my friends at Blackford. He was not in my 68 class, but graduated in 1966. The name in the yearbook is Dick Wilkie. But apparently, Dick, or Richard, was his middle name, which is why we missed his death. He and I played in bands together, and he was with the Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1974, on tour, and on the Kenton Plays Chicago album. Dick is standing underneath the mirror on the bus, short with dark glasses. He also toured with many other stars in his career.
